PRESS RELEASE – JULY 25, 2010

Love to Read Presents Engaging Alphabet Animations for 1– 6 Years

Viva Design Inc. has produced and released its first Love to Read DVD series for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. With its playfully animated alphabet and words, the engaging images inspire a child’s desire to read. Parents will also be delighted by the digital downloads, free coloring pages, and animated flashcards offered at www.lovetoread.com

As the mom of Cosima and Nikolas, Love to Read’s creative director Ulrike Kerber developed the concept while sharing her love of reading with them. Not satisfied with existing products, the graphic designer with extensive experience in animation and film created her own beautiful DVD series for children. She believes that your child can learn to read and that an introduction to reading is vital for early childhood development.

In addition to beginning letter recognition, Love to Read is a playful learning experience that exposes children to design, art, an eclectic mix of music, and filmmaking. The 40-minute DVD presents the alphabet in stop-motion animation made with simple recyclable household materials such as noodles, licorice, rice, foil, and marshmallows. The first edition of this DVD for kids focuses on letters and single words with whimsical story lines that stimulate them to explore, recognize, and remember the alphabet.

Even parents will enjoy Love to Read with its hi-end production and “how to” section on creating simple animation with a digital camera. The website also includes an Alphabet Blog with alphabets designed by various artists.

As an excellent resource for caregivers and teachers, the Love to Read DVD will soon also be released in Spanish and German. This allows the DVDs to be used as an introduction to foreign languages. Love to Read books, coloring pages, memory games, creative kits, and iphone/ipad applications are planned for the near future.
The motion graphics company Viva Design Inc. was founded in 1998 by Ulrike Kerber. Based in Santa Barbara, California, it has won awards and nominations such as The Television Academy Emmy nomination, New York Festival, BDA, Omni Awards, Type Directors’ Club Award, and Art Director’s Club Award.

24-hours of art-making
Local artists work side-by-side for 24-hours, Santa Barbara, CA

Spurred by the enthusiasm of the first event of it’s kind last year in october,  artists will come together again for a 24 hour art event. At the Viva Design Space in downtown Santa Barbara, a small group of local artists will put their worlds on hold while they sink into an intensive creative rhythm for a 24-hour cycle. Beginning at 10:00 am on Saturday, May16th 2009, and concluding at 10:00 am the next day, these artists will have an opportunity to push their internal boundaries, test their creative endurance and immerse themselves in process.
Saul Gray-Hildenbrand and Ethan Turpin, feel the experience should be about “art for the sake of art”, with no other limitations or rules.
The artists will be working side-by-side, where they are likely to find renewed inspiration and form strong bonds from the experience... but ultimately, this is an individual journey.  Each participant has the freedom to work as they wish, on whatever inspires them at the moment – whether it be their own projects, to explore new techniques, or to collaborate.

While visitors are not permitted during the 24-hour period, the studio will open to the public at the conclusion of the event at 10:00 am on Sunday, May17th, for an informal art showing of their work.

The formal art opening will be held on Thursday, June 4th, 2009 from 5:00-8:00 pm (coinciding with 1st Thursday’s art walk) at the Viva Design Studios, where guests may view the final artwork and have an opportunity to speak with the artists about their experience and the work.

Tea fire in Santa Barbara

Posted by ulrike in events

Jan 02, 2009

The Santa Barbara tea fire destroyed over 230 homes, and our house was right in the middle of it. Miraculously our structure was not affected and we got away with smoke damages. We moved out our home, and moved 5 more times in three weeks, finally settling into a hotel for one month. We did not move our belongings back, because we like our home stripped and empty. All those books, that we loved before....I don't even miss them... we are lucky
